A Spring Break Adventure...

When you go to art school, the work load is ambiguous, the tutors are mysterious, and the breaks are generous! And by generous, I mean of course...lengthy.

So where does a young art student go for Easter Holiday "on a budget?"

Left Glasgow on March 14th - Flew to Shannon Airport and took a bus to
Galway, Ireland where I stayed with my friend Caitlin who is studying there for the semester. She showed me the sights of lovely, quaint Galway--took me to get Fish & Chips by the water; saw a crazy St. Paddy's Day parade with lots of green, shamrock, and Irish Pride!!; went "fishing" on the beach.

GALWAY, Ireland

Took the bus to Dublin and spent a day wandering around the city by myself. It was a perfect size for a one day jam-packed sight-seeing day. I was able to walk most of the city, and saw Trinity College, a few art museums, a bunch of churches, the castle, and my favorite part--the Guinness Factory!

DUBLIN, Ireland

I left Dublin on March 21st to meet up with Heidi in Paris!! for a 3.33 day Easter weekend. Luckily we arrived at the hotel at the same time and set right out on the town to catch a "quick" bite to eat--(French) Onion Soup and Salad--and of course, Bread. In between the numerous sights and museums we saw in our jam-packed days, we managed to eat enough Crepes and Croissants and drink enough Espresso and Red Wine that could last us a lifetime! It was sad to see Heidi off, but I stayed for another 6 days! My friend Sarah who is studying abroad for the semester, was kind enough to be my lovely hostess for the week. During the days while Sarah was at class, I casually roamed around the city and was finally able to take in the culture at a less-hurried pace. It was very nice to sit and do some sketching, or spend about 3 hours at the modern art museum (all things I knew Heidi did not have on her 'Top 10 Paris' Must Do List. I even met up with a fellow Glasgow School of Art friend, Molly for a day in Paris, and we all went out on the town for drinks. The only snag I ran into was when my flight was canceled the day before my departure--due to the new British Airways Terminal at Heathrow Airport. All worked out in the end, and I sadly left Sarah in Paris for London.

PARIS, France

In London, I met up with my friend Colleen from the Glasgow School of Art. Because we had both been to London briefly before, we outlined only a few days to hit the major sights we hadn't already seen. Nearing the end of my long holiday adventure, I was already pretty exhausted from all the traveling so we kept things short but sweet. London was a blast, and we had beautiful weather. Unfortunately we couldn't make it to Stonehenge because of the "off season" costs, but we did take a picture with a poster at the British Museum--it will suffice. After all, they're just a bunch of stones. After finding platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross Station, we took the speedy Virgin train back to Glasgow, and were able to see lovely English country-sides. We rolled into Glasgow Central Station on April 2nd--It felt very very good to finally be 'home.'

Feb. 8 - 14 . 2008

DAY 1 [Arrival]
"Rescue by Fire Brigade"

original estimated flight duration: 2.5 hours
our "flight" duration: aprox. 8 hours
---[held hostage on the ground for 5 hours]

Iceland Air check-in at Heathrow Airport, London: Mile long queue of 10 year old British school children from Manchester, attempting to go skiing in Maine (who travels to America from London through Iceland??)
Question of the trip early on becomes: "Who goes to Iceland?!"

--In the airport, "Reykjavik please stand by"...England Rugby team spotting, on their way to Wales

--Molly's "Are you an American??" firm pat-down at security check...of course she had Palette knives, a wood block cutter, and a can of soup in her carry on [all of her liquids were under 2 oz. and in a clear zip-lock bag]

--I'm in the very last seat of the plane to hell; apparently 10 year old British children don't even have bladders, the amount of times they all got up to go to the bathroom; the "little gentlemen" sitting next to me are looking at a dirty mag, offering me "I love boobs" stickers and looking at me like i'm an insane person when I admit my "final destination" is in fact, Reykjavik--I love being pitied by young children...WHICH BRINGS ME TO 9 PM, still stuck on the plane of sea-sickness. We are soon to "dis-embark" with the help of a rescue team and fire crews creating barricades from the wind.

PART II
"Leave All Handbags"
...As I stuffed my valuables into my coat pockets (wallet, camera, ipods, passport slung around my neck in the dorky holder midge gave me, cell phone) I couldn't help but think about the Titanic sinking..."women and children first!" It was quite dramatic, everyone lined up, forced to leave behind their Cosmos and newspapers, ruck-sacks and brief-cases; the suave Icelandic business man next to me nonchalantly tucking a book down the back of his pants and taking nothing else; while the 10 year old British children ironically yell, "But Sir, all of my stuff IS valuable."

I think we were all slightly pissed off when we WEREN'T immediately thrown from the staircase leading up to the aircraft once we stepped outside of the plane--I mean we HAD just paid for some sort of show after all, with five hours of our time. The local Reykjavik News was there, reporting the safe removal of "the hostages," during the worst storm in Iceland since 1938 (just my luck). Once inside, around 10 PM, we headed for the one place still open and Molly and I had our first 400 krona Viking Beers. With no idea how long it would take them to get our bags off the plane, and with the main road from the airport shut off, we decided to wait in out in the Airport, Tom Hanks Americaaan style.

Molly and I purchased large oranges for an early morning snack, incase we were the only ones stirring in the early AM. We did a lap around the international terminal, scoping out ideal "neighborhoods" ie nooks and crannies; got a cart to hold leaflets we gathered to amuse ourselves during the wait, and finally settled into a nice flat with a gorgeous backyard overlooking the...runway.

It wasn't as uncomfortable as I had imagined it to be...which is what I think scared me most. More than once I awoke extremely confused from the middle of an intensive dream. When we finally decided to remove ourselves the next morning, passengers were already taking over our benches with no worries about it--a couple of people and another group of school children did pass by at around 4 AM, and I definitely saw sympathy in their eyes--the same shifty eyes I would give a homeless man and his money cup on the streets of NYC...had I, in less than 24 hours, turned into the Icelandic [greatest living conditions in the world] equivalent of the NYC bum?

DAY 2
At 8AM, we were forced to hire a $160 US dollar taxi ride to Reykjavik from the Airport because nothing else was running still--we were told that our bags would be transported to the Bus Station later in the afternoon. We decided to walk around the city centre for a while--which was in freezing weather with intermittent snow and harsh winds--we wandered the coast harbor, visited Hallgrimskirkja church at the top of the hill, and journeyed across town to the Saga Museum which had turned into a venue for bike tricks overnight (of course). After many bus mix-ups and wrong routes, we arrived back at the bus station to claim our bags :) then we finally got the Hostel and got a warm shower! After purchasing minimal groceries for the week (which cost us aprox. 40 US dollars each), we cooked our first of many pasta and plain tomato sauce dinners.

DAY 1 --
Arrived via Night Bus (harry potter style) @ 6:30 AM (9 hour bus ride from Glasgow). Proceeded to wander around London until the 2PM group check-in at the Generator Hostel. First glimpses of Big Ben, the Eye, and Chinatown for a cheap but fulfilling Vietnamese lunch. First exhibit with class: Royal Academy of the Arts: "From Russia"-- highlights from exhibit include works from Picasso, Gaugin, Matisse, Kandinsky, Popova, Malevich --> the exhibit focused on "...the ebb and flow of Western influence and Russian independence that runs through the many different artistic groupings that sprang up during the period [second half of the 19th century]..." Later that night, we met up with classmates and tutors at the Horse and Hound Pub--personal discovery of Tetleys beer mmm

DAY 2--
Tate Britain: Peter Doig Exhibit
Wandered through "the ghetto" of London to see one of my tutor's pieces in a small gallery--purchased and pushed around some very questionable fish and chips (never to be spoken of again). Saw WICKED that night at the Apollo Theater.

DAY 3--
Hayward Gallery: "Laughing in a Foreign Language" & "Rodchenko" exhibits.
Tate Modern "States of Flux"; Kara Walkers display; Rothko Room; etc.

Enhanced Beverages: Friend or Foe?

The following is a field guide of sorts to the world of “enhanced beverages.” A coming of age tale, this guide has been inspired because tap water lost it’s mojo back in the 60s and because plain bottled water just can’t cut it anymore.

Whether you’re sculpting the guns at the gym or taking the dog for a walk around the block, hydration is
important – but so is looking cool while you’re doing it.

They say you are what you eat, but you’re also what you drink...

Entering a War Zone

Ernie Macmillan liked to destroy things. Ernie liked to fire small pebbles at the birds in his neighbor’s birdbath with slingshots he’d made out of large rubber bands and uniquely shaped Y branches. After scaring off the birds, he would pour salt on the slugs he found under the birdbath so he could watch them shrivel up and die. Ernie would then return to his yard and duck behind the overflowing garbage cans lined up against the backside of his house and take aim at larger targets—rabbits, squirrels, and the old lady across the street’s fat cat Jasper. The Macmillans were white trash, and everyone on the block knew it but them.
Ernie once spent an entire summer afternoon digging a large ditch behind his mother’s neglected flower garden—now over-run with dandelions, in hopes of catching a squirrel or bunny or tiger like the boy in Swiss Family Robinson. After covering the pit with layers of fallen twigs and leaves to disguise his booby trap, he crouched behind the trashcans and waited. Eventually he grew tired and moved on to burning holes through dry leaves with a magnifying glass. He had just caught the center of a large Maple leaf on fire when he heard a huge crash. Overcome with joy, Ernie dropped the magnifying glass and rushed over to his trap to find fat Jasper on his back at the bottom on his pit with a broken hind-leg. After Jasper’s owner Mrs. Flowers tried to press chargers for the injuries inflicted upon her precious feline companion, a war was born.

Second Project for Drawing Through Process...

This project stems from the first project...using the same subject matter, we were directed to make a "dramatic", more "simplistic" image (if our first was complex) by using a liquid called gum arabic to preserve the parts of the photocopied image we wanted, and by then painting the entire surface with waterproof black india ink. I created 2 images:

I embossed the paper of the first image with stencils I made to match the text in the original piece, of the words stop, look, and listen.

My First Art Project For Design Studies...

In this project, we had to take pictures of "letterforms in the environment." We then had to pick 4 pictures that conveyed some sort of theme, and then find fonts that matched as closely as possible to the letterforms in our pictures. The original pictures were regular 4x6 color prints, and each page of the final piece is 10x10. The pictures were enlarged on a color photocopy machine, but the color was dropped. This was done to get a high quality black and white print. The letterforms were hand drawn with black ink. The book itself was assembled using an accordion style fold.
